About
Quirky Black girlie incoming!! A Detroit native who now identifies as an Angeleno, Elan spent most of her life learning how to navigate cookouts as the “awkward” Black girl who STILL struggles to code-switch. Is there an ancestor hotline she can call? Her peers definitely labeled her an “oreo” — a Black girl who’s “White-acting.” But she couldn’t help growing up with a grandma who taught English and insisted she speak “properly.” So much for any street cred she longed for as a kid.
Does she embrace that now in her comedy? You betcha! Her point of view explores Black women outside of hood or baby mama stereotypes — and shines a light on their awkward, lovable sides too, which she gets to continuously explore in the Groundlings program (Writing Lab here she comes!) and through her writing samples (see: YouTube comedy sketches and TikToks). She and Quinta Brunson would totally be besties.
Her Marvelous Mrs. Maisel spec in which she included Black neighbors is another example of how she comedically tackled social justice issues–because comedy is the best medicine–while still being true to herself.
Now a proud member of the Independent Writers’ Caucus (YAS, laurel!) she’s excited to keep sharing her enthusiastic, playful spirit as a comedian and Black creative writer with this community of equally impressive and creative members!
